Seventeen new business licenses have filed on 63rd Street so far in 2026. In the same January-through-mid-May window last year, the corridor produced six — and five of those six were salons or barber shops. That's a 183% increase, and the category mix has completely changed.
The corridor stretches roughly five miles from Englewood on the east through Chicago Lawn and West Lawn to Clearing on the west. The 2026 filings span all four neighborhoods:
- Chicago Lawn: 6 licenses
- Clearing: 7 licenses
- West Lawn: 3 licenses
- Englewood: 1 license
Zero of the 17 are multi-location operators. Every filing is a first-time or single-location business — the lowest multi-location share of any corridor we've tracked this year, well below the citywide 86% average.
Corner stores are leading the wave
Seven of the 17 filings are grocery, convenience, or general-merchandise stores: Sacramento Food Mart at 2954 W 63rd, Al's Corner Store at 3100 W 63rd, 63rd Corner Store at 2501 W 63rd, Quick Shop Grocery at 3255 W 63rd, El Rey Del Nopal Produce at 4120 W 63rd, Fiesta Acapulco Dollar at 4243 W 63rd, and Baba's One Stop Shop at 1007 W 63rd in Englewood.
Seven neighborhood markets on one street in five months. In 2025, none of the six 63rd Street filings were in this category.
The rest of the mix
The other ten licenses show the variety you'd expect from a working commercial corridor:
- Hacienda Los Pena at 3231 W 63rd (food and bar — one of only two recycled addresses on the whole street)

No cannabis dispensaries. No coworking spaces. No national chains pulling multiple license types. This is neighborhood retail built by neighborhood operators.
Why this corridor matters
63rd Street isn't on any broker's hot-corridor list. It doesn't show up in the downtown-recovery narratives or the Loop's 188% spike. But 17 filings from 17 independent operators in five months — on a Southwest Side street where last year's entire output was six salon licenses — is a signal that's easy to miss if you're only watching the North Side and downtown.
For vendors selling POS systems, commercial refrigeration, store fixtures, or small-business insurance, 63rd Street between Western and Harlem is producing more first-time retail buyers per mile than most corridors in the city.
