Chicago Expanding Businesses: 77 Licenses, 24 Are Tow Trucks

By BizPulse Editorial

In the 30 days ending September 25, 2026 (August 27 to September 25), BizPulse's license database logged 77 new licenses from multi-location operators, flat against 76 in the prior 30 days. The flat headline hides a drop. 24 of the 77 are tow-truck licenses issued to one company on one day, and four more carry no Chicago address. That leaves 49 licenses at 47 Chicago addresses, down 34% from 74 in the prior 30 days (July 28 to August 26, 2026).

Key stats — 30 days ending September 25, 2026:

  • 77 new licenses from expanding operators citywide, versus 76 in the prior 30 days
  • 24 of those 77 are Towing - Tow Truck licenses issued to Redline Towing on September 9, 2026
  • 49 new-location licenses at 47 Chicago addresses across 28 community areas, down 34% from 74 in the prior 30 days
  • Only 1 of those 47 addresses has an exact-address building permit issued in the 12 months ending September 25, 2026

How Many Chicago Businesses Are Really Expanding Right Now?

BizPulse tracked 49 new-location licenses from expanding operators at 47 Chicago addresses across 28 community areas in the 30 days ending September 25, 2026, down 34% from the prior 30 days. The count of operators barely moved (47 versus 48), so fewer companies opened multiple doors at once.

The 24 tow-truck licenses went to Redline Towing on September 9, 2026, across two registered addresses that BizPulse can't map to a Chicago community area. Four Regulated Business Licenses in the finance category also have no Chicago community area. Strip all 28 out and you're left with storefronts, garages, and salons someone can actually visit.

By neighborhood, West Town and Near West Side each logged four licenses. Edgewater, Uptown, Lincoln Park, and Jefferson Park each logged three. No single community area dominates, so this isn't a one-corridor story.

So what: if you sold against the raw 77, you'd overestimate Chicago's expansion pipeline by more than half. Filter to a mapped community area before you build a call list.

Which Industries Are Opening New Chicago Locations?

Three clusters stand out in BizPulse's license tracking for the window.

Restaurants and food: eight licenses from seven operators. Buffalo Wild Wings filed at 2112 N Clybourn Ave in Lincoln Park on September 22. Qdoba filed at 3647 N Western Ave in North Center on September 11. A 7-Eleven filed at 5206 N Western Ave in Lincoln Square on September 15.

Parking and valet: seven licenses from seven different operators, all of them valet, booting, or garage filings. SP Plus took a valet license at 2300 N Lincoln Park West on September 23. Innovative Parking Solutions registered for private booting at 3201 N Broadway in Lake View on September 2. Fair 1 Parking and Valet Parking Authority both filed in the Near North Side, on September 9 and September 1.

Wireless retail: three licenses. Metro By T-Mobile opened at 5605 W Division St in Austin (August 28) and 4943 N Milwaukee Ave in Jefferson Park (September 1). A & B Wireless filed at 4839 N Milwaukee Ave in Jefferson Park on September 23.

So what: parking operators need liability coverage, signage, and security. Restaurant chains need POS, hood cleaning, and pest control. Wireless retailers need fixtures and small-format buildouts. Each cluster has its own buyer list.

What This Means for Sellers

BizPulse data shows these operators are licensing first and permitting later, if at all. Only one of the 47 addresses, Auto Valet at 900 W Randolph St in the Near West Side, has an exact-address building permit in the 12 months ending September 25, 2026. It has two.

If you wait for a permit to prospect, you'll miss almost all of them. The license is the signal. Our September expansion roundup covers why, and the Q3 license trends report shows the same pattern at quarter scale.

You can pull the newest licenses by neighborhood on BizPulse's new business feed or filter them in BizPulse search. The underlying filings come from the City's Business Licenses dataset on the Chicago Data Portal.

Bottom line: Chicago's 77 expansion licenses in the 30 days ending September 25, 2026 shrink to 49 real Chicago locations once one tow fleet and four out-of-town filings are removed.
