Every weekday, the City of Chicago publishes the new business licenses it issued the day before. Most people never see that file. We pull it, clean it, and turn it into the searchable database powering BizPulse.
This blog is the second half of the story.
What you'll find here
We use the same dataset that runs our search to write up what's actually happening on the ground:
- Which neighborhoods are absorbing the most new restaurants, salons, and storefronts each quarter
- Which industries are expanding, contracting, or quietly turning over
- Owner-side patterns: who's running multiple locations, who's franchising, who's exiting
Why it matters
License data is leading indicator data. By the time a business shows up in Yelp reviews or in the news, it's been operating for months. Licenses get filed before the doors open. If you sell to small business — equipment, insurance, software, services — that lead time is the whole game.
